I am a son, uncle, husband, biker, student, teacher, researcher, and an alcoholic.
There are infinite ways to get to where we are today. My journey has led me down some missed opportunities and wrong turns. However, perseverance and hope (along with many people I have met along the path) have always kept me moving forward in to the right direction.
ADHD has prevented me from taking the traditional path through the United State of America's educational systems. I failed the 4th grade, but I still graduated. I received an academic dismissal during my undergraduate, but I still graduated. I received a suspension and academic dismissal during two master's programs, but I still graduated. Currently, I have two and half years invested in a Ph.D., and again I am struggling with academic achievements that have prevented me from finishing my degree. But am I done, no. I will continue to move forward and see where my next path leads me.
My success does not stem from the grades I possess, but rather the people on my journey that have given me hope to persevere through a system not built for everyone. I keep these people close and have made sure I have helped those who have had their own struggles.
If we start to look for our similarities rather than our differences, we can start to see we are more alike than we are different. I am thankful for this life and the journey I have been on. Paths for everyone are different, but for a brief moment in our lives, we can choose to share our present journey with those on similar paths.
